Debunk of Sleep and Snoring Myths

clockThere are a lot of fictitious myths concerning sleep and snoring. People are surrounded by old misconceptions about things, which are important for them. Such myths affect real life and sometimes cause negative and dangerous consequences.

Here are the most widespread myths and truth about sleep and snoring:

Myth 1:
The amount of sleep a person gets is not really important.

Truth: It’s scientifically proved that a body of an average person requires 7-9 hours of sleep a day for good health and state of mind. If the under sleeping happens too often and for a long period of time a person might get serious problems with his/her health. The hours of  “stolen” sleep have to be compensated in close future otherwise a person may experience health problems, such as excessive weight, hypertension (high blood pressure), irritability, low productivity and relaxation of attention.

Myth 2: Snoring is usual and absolutely not injurious phenomenon, especially among men.

Truth: Snoring in some people is inoffensive, but it may indicate more serious health disorders, such as sleep apnea. As usual, there are other symptoms of this disease along with snoring, such as sleepiness during the day.

Sleep apnea is a state when intervals in breathing occur. They don’t allow the air flow to circulate freely in the air passages. Such people wake up often in the night from the lack of air. Sleep apnea leads to the insufficient amount of oxygen in the body, heart and vascular system problems. The risks of cardiovascular diseases increase in such situation.

Chronic snoring may be an indicator of high blood pressure. Obesity and a massive neck may lead to sleep apnea. That’s why people that snore should ask a doctor for appropriate treatment.
