There are several simple tips that will help you to prevent snoring:
- Avoid the consumption of alcohol before going to sleep. Try to lose excessive weight. Most snorers are overweight. Losing excess weight has been shown to essentially decrease snoring.
- Don’t eat before going to sleep. Midnight eating and snacks causes your muscle to weaken.
- Avoid sleeping pills or other sedatives and medicines. Although they put you to sleep, they relax your throat and tongue muscles, making your snoring worse.
- Stop smoking. Smoking causes nasal and lung congestion. And this, in its turn, causes the sound of snoring.
- Go to bed at the same time every night and get enough sleep. Regular sleep habits will help you to sleep better. Besides, more restful sleep will decrease snoring.
- Sleep on your side, not on your back. Though heavy snorers will snore in any position, moderate snorers tend to snore only when they are sleep on their backs. If you can’t retrain yourself to sleep on your side, you can sew a pocket onto the back of your pajamas and insert a tennis ball. This will help keep you from sleeping on your back.
- Sleep without a pillow, because pillow can contribute to airway obstruction.
- Raise the head of your bed 10 cm to 15 cm by putting bricks under the legs of our bed. Such slight incline will prevent the tongue from falling toward the back of the throat and contributing to a narrowed airway.
- Treat your breathing problems promptly, like stuffy nose caused by a cold or allergies.
If none of these methods work, make an appointment with a physician immediately. Chronic snoring can be a sign of a serious condition, like sleep apnea, during which people stop breathing for short periods during the night. Sleep apnea can be quite dangerous and should be cared for under the supervision of a medical professional.
