| Continuous Positive Airway Pressure | 45% of usual adults snore at least from time to time, and 25% are customary snorers. Snoring is disturbing problem that more frequently strikes males and overweight people and it usually grows worse with age. Irritating snoring sound is caused because of blocking of air passage which vibrates during breathing.
Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) carries air into your airway through a specially designed nasal mask or pillows. The mask does not breathe for you; the flow of air creates enough pressure when you inhale to keep your airway open. CPAP is the most effective non-surgical treatment for the mollification of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.
If your otolaryngologist affirms that the CPAP treatment is right for you, you will need to wear the nasal mask nightly. During this treatment, it is possible that you may have to undertake an essential change in your lifestyle. It can be weight losing, quitting smoking, or adopting a new exercise regimen.
CPAP is effective nearly in all 100%, except some patients with severe nasal obstruction, although it does not cure the problem. Nevertheless, studies have shown that long-¬term compliance in wearing the nasal CPAP is about 70%. Some patients have found the device to be claustrophobic or have difficulty using it during traveling. If you find that you cannot wear a nasal CPAP nightly, a surgical treatment might be necessary.
In general, CPAP is effective for moderate and severe obstructive sleep apnea: - Continuous positive airway pressure abates sleepiness during the day. - CPAP may lowers blood pressure in people with moderate or severe sleep apnea.
Risks Problems that may be caused by CPAP: - Nightmares and excessive dreaming in the beginning of using - Nosebleeds - Dry nose and sore throat - Runny nose, sneezing, and nasal congestion - Irritation of the skin on the face and of the eyes - Headaches - Abdominal bloating - Leaks around the mask because it doesn’t fit properly
Rare complication of CPAP: - Severe nosebleeds - Bacterial infection in the area around the brain and spinal cord
In fact, you can limit or stop some of the side effects: - Your doctor may adjust your CPAP to reduce the problem. - Make sure that air doesn’t leak around the mask. - If your nose is runny, you doctor will prescribe you nasal spray medications.
