| Types of Snoring | There are two main types of snoring:
1. Primary snoring. Primary snoring is innocuous as usual. This type of snoring is also called simple snoring. Person breaths noisy during sleep then he or she has this type of snoring. This happens when some kind of the nasal passage blockage is observed. The level of the noise can differ from insignificant to high. Such snoring is rhythmic. People who have this type of snoring have good sleep as usual. Their snoring doesn’t disturb them in the majority of cases.
2. Snoring Indicative of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Snoring Indicative of Obstructive Sleep Apnea might have more serious consequences for a person’s health. It may even lead to death because of asphyxia (air starvation). This type of snoring is caused by partial blockage of the air passage. In some cases a person can be exposed to complete blockage of the air passage for a very short period of time (10-15 seconds).
About 12 million Americans suffer from OSA and, unfortunately, it is very common (information of the National Institutes of Health). People who have OSA can have from 20 to 30 unintentional pauses in their breathing per hour while they sleep. This happens because the throat muscles and tongue relax and block the opening of the airpassage. This snoring type may show that person has obstructive sleep apnoea. People, who suffers from this type of snoring feel drowsy and have languid mood the next day as usual. Also they have low oxygen levels in their blood. Unfortunately, 90% of people who have OSA don’t know their diagnoses and remain untreated.
Scientists determine what type of snoring a person has with the help of polysomnogram (a sleep study).
