The areas of our lives that are usually affected by snoring:
- General well-being or quality of life - Occupational worsening - Diseases
General Well-Being or Quality of Life Snoring can cause a severe tension on a relationship. It is beyond all bearing to sleep next to someone who is snoring every night. Very soon, you will become angry and resentful. You may even begin to wake the snorer up to stop the snoring sound. As a result, in the morning, you are both tired and upset from the night's disturbance.
Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) often wake up tired and irritable. It is pretty difficult for them to stay focused. As a rule they become forgetful. None of these characteristics are favorable to maintaining good relationships. The patients with OSA often suffer from fatigue and sleepiness that prevents them from being full participants in life.
Occupational Worsening The best arguments of occupational impairment because of OSA can be found for truck drivers. There is good news: proper treatment can restore normal driving ability.
OSA affects people in all areas of life and occupations. The overall economic impact is following:
- sick-leave; - health insurance costs; - accidents on the job; - lowered productivity.
Medical Disease Snoring by itself can’t contribute to other health problems. OSA, on the other hand, is associated with many serious medical conditions. They are:
- Hypertension: nearly 40 % of people affected by OSA have being treated for hypertension.
- Coronary Artery Disease: the patients with OSA have 2-3 times increased risk of heart attack.
- Stroke: the risk for stroke in patients with OSA increases in 2-3 times.
- Irregular Heart Rhythms/Sudden Death: connection between OSA and these problems is believable. Nevertheless, no one has actually provided good evidence for or against there being a connection.
- Adult-Onset Diabetes: the stress of OSA stimulates weight gain which causes insulin resistance. This causes a vicious cycle of further weight gain and more insulin resistance. Ultimately, the body cannot produce enough insulin and the symptoms of diabetes develop.
